Top Software For Analyzing A Computer Crash

Many users fail to make good use of the utilities provided with Windows for troubleshooting a computer crash. These programs can often help locate which of your applications or hardware components are causing the problem.

Possibly the most useful utility when a PC keeps crashing is the event viewer log (start, run, type in eventvwr.exe). This log file shows exceptions or errors that were being thrown in the moments before the computer crash. These exceptions will relate back to different applications or hardware components that may be experiencing difficulties. Research the codes (which never make it on screen) on the web to see what manufacturers are other users have attempted to help resolve the issue.

More generally, you can check the Device Manager to make sure your hardware has not become corrupted or developed issues. This handy utility indicates if there are connection problems, driver issues, etc. with any of your hardware components. It even suggests different ways of fixing the problem.

Hard Drive Repair | Fixing External Disk Drives

Computer hard drive repair of external disk has a few differences from trying to repair internal drives. You should still however begin by doing hardware checks (to ensure you don’t cause data loss).

Begin by running the external hard drive normally while connected to the system. Listen for sounds of grinding noises coming from internal components. This is a sure sign that components are starting to seize up or have become loose or damaged. It is not recommended to open up the external hard drive yourself since this could void your warranty. If your PC keeps freezing every time you connect the drive then open up the Device Manager utility to check for problems. It may simply be that the device is not being detected correctly or has experienced a conflict with some other peripheral device. This can often happen if you are using a USB router device. The program will suggest different ways of fixing the problem.

Sometimes the hard drive repair is not actually necessary and the fault will actually lie with your USB ports or USB cable. Do a visual examination of the cables for signs of any costs or damages to the cable itself and check that connector pins are not lost, pushed in or broken in any way. Try switching USB ports to make sure that there is no physical damage to one specific port.

Finally, complete your hard drive repair troubleshooting by checking for bad sectors on the external hard disk memory. Fix A Broken Hard Drive | Hardware And Software Issues

It should be possible to fix a broken hard drive if you can identify the hardware issues or possible software corruption that has led to the fault. Here I’ll go through some of the checks you can do and tools that can prove useful when doing such analysis.

Start by doing a manual check that all cables connected to the hard drive are in good condition. There should be no heat damage the cables and connector pins should not be pushed in, bent or broken. Clear out any dust from inside the computer as this could lead to overheating on the hard drive. If there are signs of burnt components or heat damage on the broken hard drive then you should contact a PC expert to complete a hard disk data recovery rather than risk any data loss on the system.

Your software checks begin with the BIOS menu (accessed when Windows is booting up). Check that there is not a hardware conflict between the broken hard drive and one of your other peripherals. If there is a conflict, then temporarily uninstall the conflicting component to check whether or not your BIOS can identify the drive.

It could simply be that the broken hard drive has a bad sector. This can occur if there’s physical damage on the platters or problems with the read/write heads. But it can also occur when software managing the hard drive data becomes corrupted. Complete the HDD repair of bad sectors using Windows error checking utility. This is also available via the emergency boot disks if required.

Your last resort option is to complete a data recovery. Install a suitable commercial application onto a second partition and scan the broken hard drive for any files. Use an external hard drive case if your computer will not start up in order to house the internal disk and connect it to another PC.

Understanding Why My Computer Keeps Restarting Itself

The trouble with computer restarts is that error messages are not shown on screen. Whenever my computer keeps restarting itself I resort to a couple of different PC checks to help identify which hardware components and software tools are causing the problem.

First, check the CPU is not overheating. This can be done using the BIOS menu which often contains a CPU temperature setting under diagnostics. Overheating PCs can cause restarts since the BIOS will shutdown system to protect internal components from burning out. To solve this, check the inside of the computer is not covered in dust, that fans are in good working condition and that the heat sink is in a fit state.

If the computer restarts before you are able to log onto the system then your options are limited. In particular, try using the last known good configuration. This can be found under the advanced Windows start menu (F8 key as system boots). This utility provides useful way of reversing the registry file back to an earlier edition. The intention of doing this is that any damage to the registry keys that is causing the restarts will then be rolled back.

More commonly however, it should be possible to login and at least get to view your event viewer log (start/run/eventvwr). In this log file it displays the errors that never made it on screen in the lead up to when my computer keeps restarting. These errors can then be searched online for different types of solutions.

Lastly, you need to do some hardware checks. Windows own error checking tool can be used to do a bad sector repair and analysis of the hard drive partitions (for both software and hardware faults). In addition, the Device Manager tool should be able to identify any sort of problems with your hardware peripherals or components and suggest different ways of fixing them.

My Computer Keeps Freezing: What Solutions Can Help?

By using some regular PC maintenance techniques I’ve been able to work out why my computer keeps freezing on several different occasions. The reasons can be quite varied but some of the most common causes can actually be fixed quite easy.

Begin by checking there is no mechanical damage to your PC or the hard drive in particular. If you hear clicking or grinding noises from the drive wallets in operation then get a PC repair experts to check it out. Open the Device Manager utility and see if there are any hardware issues with the system or any peripherals. It could be that your laptop keeps freezing due to hardware conflicts or device driver issues.

Next, focus on the possibility of there being a virus on your system. Adware, malware or spyware can easily affect the operating system programs making them behave oddly leading to computer freezes. Run a full anti-virus scan of all drives and external memory.

With the two major causes check you can now begin to focus on some of the less critical issues. Start by making sure there is enough free space on the hard drive. There should be 10% left free for virtual memory. If not, remove some of your temper he files or old applications you don’t use anymore.

You should also check the disk drive is not fragmented too much. Use Windows own Disk Defragmenter to reorder file fragments on the disk. This speeds up disk access and in severe cases issue can actually need to freezes.

In many instances, my computer keeps freezing because of registry corruption. This can happen as applications change, are updated or removed incorrectly. These rates repair this is to use a registry cleaner or to resort to using System Restore to rollback the file entirely.

Finally, there may simply be too many programs running at once. Open Task Manager and check to see how much RAM is being used. If it is over 50% usage then computer freezes will repeatedly happen. Close down any background services or applications you do not require.

Virtual Worlds Go Mobile

In September of 2010, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Eric Schmidt, CEO of software giant Google, announced that their developers are now giving app developments for smartphones a higher priority than that of developments for PCs.

Google isn’t the only one turning their focus towards the development of smartphone apps. People are beginning to use their mobile devices more than ever and they are clamoring for new applications. It is predicted that thousands of developers will soon be joining the quest to deliver what the people want.

One goal for developers is to make it more possible to access virtual worlds via your smartphone. Although just visiting traditional chat rooms or other everyday sites is a breeze with a smartphone, virtual worlds are a more challenging proposition. The problem is virtual environments demand great amounts of bandwidth and memory and suck up battery life at a rapid rate, so it is not yet practical to use your mobile device to visit those destinations.
